Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, lies on the Danube about an hour from Vienna, close enough for a day. The castle stands above the river and the old town below it.
Getting there
ÖBB regional express trains run twice an hour to Bratislava hlavná stanica or Bratislava-Petržalka, in about an hour (oebb.at); the Twin City Liner sails down the Danube in season.
The castle and the old town
Walk up to the castle for the view over the Danube, then down into the old town.
ÖBB says REX trains run twice an hour and take about an hour.
Our advice: Slovakia uses the euro, and both cities are in the Schengen area.
